Giallo antico marble was imported to Rome from the late 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0century AD.<\/p>\n

It was used especially for revetment panels and column shafts, of which a generous donation to Ostia by the emperor Tacitus (AD 275-276) is documented.<\/p>\n

The blocks on display here, imported already in the 1st<\/sup>\u00a0century AD, were used only in a late period, as shown by their discovery in the building of the\u00a0opus sectile<\/em>\u00a0outside\u00a0Porta Marina<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The block of\u00a0alabastro a pecorella<\/em>\u00a0from Algeria and the two column drums in\u00a0alabastro listato<\/em>\u00a0(or\u00a0fiorito<\/em>) from Asia Minor, similar to others found in Rome, must have been intended for the production of revetment panels.<\/p>\n
