Large multi-storey residential complexes were built here, with apartments and shops along the front, sometimes directly connected to baths, as in the case of the\u00a0<em>Caseggiato del Serapide<\/em>\u00a0and of the\u00a0<em>Caseggiato degli Aurighi<\/em>, which formed a single compound with the\u00a0<em>Terme dei Sette Sapienti<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The elaborate and unitary layout of some building blocks has suggested the existence of a genuine \u201cplanning document\u201d, as in the case of the\u00a0<em>Casette Tipo<\/em>\u00a0and above all of the\u00a0<em>Case a Giardino<\/em>, which occupied a vast area: here residential buildings were arranged symmetrically on all four sides, with a garden courtyard at the centre.<\/p>\n<p>This district, not far from the city centre and near the ancient beach, was much appreciated by the upper-middle class, made up of entrepreneurs, administrators and functionaries working in Ostia.<\/p>\n<p>As in the other districts of the city, this area also hosted cult buildings and utilitarian complexes (<em>horrea<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"c19878\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c19878;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5117 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/980_10-1-img001887.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1493\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/980_10-1-img001887.webp 1493w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/980_10-1-img001887-224x300.webp 224w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/980_10-1-img001887-764x1024.webp 764w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/980_10-1-img001887-768x1029.webp 768w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/980_10-1-img001887-1147x1536.webp 1147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1493px) 100vw, 1493px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the start of the 2nd\u00a0century AD, during the Trajanic and above all the Hadrianic period, the western part of the city took on a prevalently residential function.
