{"id":6662,"date":"2026-01-09T15:54:56","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T15:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/educational-panels-and-maps\/i-quartieri-costieri-e-le-domus-marittime\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T17:37:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T17:37:14","slug":"the-coastal-districts-and-the-maritime-domus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/en\/educational-panels-and-maps\/the-coastal-districts-and-the-maritime-domus\/","title":{"rendered":"The Coastal Districts and the Maritime Domus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The sector of the city lying between the Republican wall circuit and the ancient coastline was initially used as a burial area, as shown by two monumental mausoleums of the late 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century BC, the best known of which is the tomb of Cartilius Poplicola.<\/p>\n<p>The development of this district, encouraged by the construction \u2013 perhaps already in the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century AD \u2013 of an embankment to protect it from the tides, is evidenced by the increasing concentration of residential, commercial and bath complexes during the Imperial period. Among the latter, the\u00a0<em>Terme di Porta Marina<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Terme Marittime<\/em>\u00a0stood out for their size and luxury.<\/p>\n<p>The coastal strip also hosted religious buildings, including the Synagogue where Ostia\u2019s Jewish community met from the mid-1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century AD.<\/p>\n<p>The district flourished particularly in the late Imperial period, following the monumentalization of the coastal road linking southern Lazio with Ostia and Portus (Via Severiana).<\/p>\n<p>A building with fine marble decorations (perhaps a luxurious\u00a0<em>domus<\/em>\u00a0of the 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century AD) impeded passage between the stretch of the Decumanus outside the city and the coast, standing in a striking position over the sea near the ancient embankment.<\/p>\n<p>The vitality of this district in late antiquity is also shown by the continuity of use of some bath buildings up to the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century AD.<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"b6a799\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b6a799;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5133 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001100_12-1-img002008.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1491\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001100_12-1-img002008.webp 1491w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001100_12-1-img002008-224x300.webp 224w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001100_12-1-img002008-763x1024.webp 763w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001100_12-1-img002008-768x1030.webp 768w, https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001100_12-1-img002008-1145x1536.webp 1145w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1491px) 100vw, 1491px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sector of the city lying between the Republican wall circuit and the ancient coastline was initially used as a burial area, as shown by two monumental mausoleums of the late 1st\u00a0century BC, the best known of which is the tomb of Cartilius Poplicola.
