The so-called Macellum, traditionally interpreted as a meat market (though recent studies have queried this function) is located near one of the city\u2019s main crossroads.<\/p>\n

It develops around a courtyard whose walls belong mainly to the mid-2nd<\/sup>\u00a0century AD.<\/p>\n

The paving and the central basin, made of reused marble, belong to a later phase (4th<\/sup>\u00a0century AD), as do the podium with a colonnade at the end of the courtyard and the connected fa\u00e7ade with niches, perhaps a nymphaeum.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Macellum<\/em>\u00a0is accessed from the Decumanus through an entrance with columns at the sides of which, in the first half of the 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0century AD, two\u00a0tabernae<\/em>\u00a0(shops) were created, provided with counters for selling fish and marble basins.<\/p>\n

The left-hand room preserves a mosaic depicting a dolphin eating a squid, with the inscription \u201cinbide te calco<\/em>\u201d (\u201cenvious creature, I trample you\u201d), as it was thought that dolphins disrupted fishing.<\/p>\n
