{"id":3264,"date":"2025-03-20T16:29:42","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T16:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/?post_type=siti-musei&#038;p=3264"},"modified":"2025-05-19T13:12:28","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T13:12:28","slug":"the-tor-boacciana-tower","status":"publish","type":"siti-musei","link":"https:\/\/ostiaantica.cultura.gov.it\/en\/sites\/archaeological-area-of-ostia-antica\/the-tor-boacciana-tower\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;Tor Boacciana&#8221; tower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tor Boacciana can be reached by passing along the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica on via di Tor Boacciana (direction: Fiumicino Airport), turning left before the bridge on the Tiber (Ponte della Scafa).<\/p>\n<p>The tower (italian \u201ctor\u201d = \u201ctorre\u201d) was built on the left bank of the Tiber in the 2nd century AD under Trajan, as brick stamps testify, right where the river flowed into the Tyrrhenian sea.<\/p>\n<p>According to researchers it must have been a\u00a0<strong>lighthouse<\/strong>\u00a0or a\u00a0<strong>guard tower<\/strong>\u00a0controlling the mouth of the river.<\/p>\n<p>During the XII century the tower was probably restored: maybe is mentioned as the \u201cfabulous but isolated tower\u201d in the Chronicles about\u00a0<strong>Richard the Lionheart<\/strong>\u2019s journey to the Holy Land on the third Crusade (1190), when he disembarked at Ostia. At that time the whole area was property of the\u00a0<strong>Family Bovazzani\u00a0<\/strong>and the tower is thought to have been named after this family, hence its current name \u201cBoacciana\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The tower was in a state of abandon already when\u00a0<strong>Pope Innocent VII<\/strong>\u00a0had it restored in 1406, and it was subsequently completely rebuilt by\u00a0<strong>Pope Martin V\u00a0<\/strong>in 1420. Since then it has been used for different purposes. In 1562, under\u00a0<strong>Pope Pius IV<\/strong>, the tower was the seat of Papal custom-house, after the flood that moved the Tiber away from the Castle of Julius II in 1557. In 1568, due to the advancement of the shoreline, the Papal custom-house was moved again to\u00a0<strong>Tor San Michele<\/strong>, another tower started by\u00a0<strong>Michelangelo Buonarroti<\/strong>\u00a0and completed by\u00a0<strong>Giovanni Lippi<\/strong>\u00a0in 1567. For some centuries the tower remained abandoned again. At the beginning of 19th century it was used as a warehouse, whereas at the end of the same century the tower\u2019s ownership went to the\u00a0<strong>Aldobrandini<\/strong>\u00a0family who rented it to\u00a0<strong>Tancredi Chiaraluce<\/strong>, who lived there and set up a refreshment and wine selling point for hunters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tor Boacciana can be reached by passing along the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica on via di Tor Boacciana (direction: Fiumicino Airport), turning left before the bridge on the Tiber (Ponte della Scafa).
